Nakd and Trek fuel 1st solo woman to row across the Indian!

Let us introduce Sarah Outen - the first (and youngest) woman to row solo across the Indian Ocean. We took such a liking to this amazingly courageous and fun loving lady that we became a sponsor of her trip.

Her sense of fun and adventure is inspiring, but her desire to raise money for charity from this exciting event is even more so.

Check out some of her achievements so far and what she is about to do and then stop and think for a moment - do you have an amazing adventure you need to set out on? This lady is infectious! Here is how Sarah Outen describes herself and her forthcoming journey.

“I am a recent Biology graduate of St Hugh’s College, Oxford University. Keen sportswoman on and off the water, loves adventure, wildlife and the outdoors. Boats or in boots, give me mountains or water and I am at my happiest - especially if I can take my dog, Bonnie, along too. Hate being overtaken, love going fast under my own steam. Sometimes bald - thank you Alopecia, but currently the noggin is fluffy.

A little about the task in hand:

Rowing solo

“In a small boat, just six metres long and two metres wide, I will head East to West over 3,100 miles as the crow flies. Leaving after the cyclone season in 2009 I will row across the Indian Ocean from Perth, SW Australia, day and night ( in between sun-cream sloshing) until I reach Mauritius, a few months later.

Past Indian ocean rowers

Anders Svedland was the first to solo the Indian Ocean back in 1971 - he went from Oz to Madagascar. On his second attempt, in 2003, Simon Chalk made it across in 107 days and then Ukrainian, Pavel Rezvoy rowed a slightly different route from Keeling Island, Australia, to Mahe in the Seychelles in 2005. John Williams in 2007, continued alone after his team mate Glenn Edwards was picked up part way through. No woman has ever attempted it.

Forty six women have successful ocean rowing crossings to their name; just seven are soloists. My attempt will be a record-breaking one as I bid to become the first woman, and the youngest and fastest person to row this ocean alone.

If you’re strong up-top and have prepared well, then you have the best chance - stubborn and strong, and with a bit of luck, you’ll weather the worst of the storms.”
